Faculty Development

The First Year Experience program provides faculty an opportunity to develop new course ideas and challenge themselves by working with first year students in an alternative and interactive way. To support faculty in this program, FYE holds various workshops for pedagogical conversations that focus on teaching first years, writing and integrating new themes across disciplines.

Exploring the First Year Experience Workshop

This is a teaching workshop for faculty new to the FYE program. It is designed to introduce new faculty to the history and goals of the program while helping them to infuse first-year student pedagogies into their First Year Seminars and Learning Communities. This will be an interactive workshop that will help faculty design their course by modeling effective course strategies.

Faculty Liberal Arts and Sciences Colloquium (FLASC)

FLASC is a semester-long workshop series where faculty from across the disciplines engage with texts and concepts related to a chosen theme. Led by Rich Bodek (History), FLASC discussions give faculty a chance to engage in conversations on diverse topics and work with colleagues from other departments for interdisciplinary interpretation of texts and course development.

Writing Across the Curriculum

First Year Experience offers an annual writing across the curriculum workshop for campus faculty during the summer.  The workshop will offer faculty the opportunity to meet in a small group setting with colleagues to discuss and explore how each discipline views:

  • the process of writing.
  • teaching of writing across our many diverse disciplines.
  • how we can incorporate writing as a learning tool in our classrooms.

While it is supported by the FYE program, the workshop is open to all faculty on campus and will not focus solely on writing in the first year. We will also be offering shorter one day workshops on specific topics during the academic year.
